Emmett Till killed
In 1955, Emmett Till, a teenager from Chicago, ran afoul of the Jim Crow system while visiting family in Money, Mississippi, the alleged commission of the crime of whistling at a white woman.
What followed was a brutal murder, which left the 14-year-old destroyed and disfigured, thrown into the Tallahatchie River with a huge cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire.
The horrific crime galvanized the civil rights movement. To own mother. Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open casket so the world could see what the murderers had done to his son. These images, captured by photographers from Chicago Defender, did mourn many, and others angry. But what has always been a harsh and brutal reminder that old ways of the South did not go quietly, and the civil rights movement would be stepped up to make this happen.
